The Centre for Construction Development and Research (CDR) is a multidisciplinary technical centre of the National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCB), supporting the development of safe, durable, sustainable and high-performance infrastructure. The Centre provides research, testing, consultancy and technical services to the cement, concrete and construction sectors, addressing the evolving needs of infrastructure development through science-based and performance-oriented solutions.
CDR brings together expertise across four specialized programmes—Concrete Technology (CON), Structural Optimization and Design (SOD), Structural Assessment and Rehabilitation (SAR), and Construction Technology and Management (CTM). The Centre undertakes comprehensive investigations ranging from evaluation and design of concrete and construction materials to structural testing, assessment, repair and rehabilitation, construction quality assurance, and development of innovative and sustainable construction technologies.
The Centre is supported by specialized laboratory facilities, including its Mechanical and Physical Investigation (MPI) Laboratory and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Laboratory. These facilities provide advanced capabilities for mechanical, physical and durability characterization of construction materials and concrete, as well as non-destructive testing, inspection and condition assessment of concrete structures. The laboratories are supported by established quality management systems and accredited testing capabilities, enabling reliable and scientifically validated results.
Through its integrated expertise in materials, concrete, structural engineering, construction quality and infrastructure assessment, CDR undertakes R&D, sponsored projects, consultancy, testing and technical advisory services for a wide range of clients and infrastructure applications. The Centre also contributes to knowledge dissemination and capacity building through technical training, demonstrations and industry interaction. Through these activities, CDR contributes to improved construction practices and the development of resilient, durable and sustainable infrastructure for the nation.
